Internet Global Location Number

The Internet Global Location Number (IGL Number) is a specific location number that is allocated by EAN Ireland for the specific proposes of company identification and identification of mailboxes used in connection with Internet/EDI based Electronic Commerce.

Internet/EDI based Electronic Commerce enables trading partners to communicate electronically using the Internet to and from EDI Systems. The communications may be point to point, on the Internet or through a Value Added Network.

The benefits of using the IGL Number are:
It is a unique world-wide system of company identification.
It is used as a reference to look up databases about the holder of the IGL Number. This ensures accuracy in data processing that free text Names and Address cannot provide.
It is composed of thirteen numeric digits and therefore is very efficient in communications and data processing.
It is consistent with the existing EDI based systems.
It is consistent with other bar coding applications within the EAN System such EAN 128 symbology. The number may be used in bar code symbols for company identification on the labels of logistical units.

The number is allocated per VAT registered company. Thus a company trading under more than one VAT registered company will require additional IGL Number's each registered company.
  Conditions of Use:
The following conditions apply to the use of the IGL Number: -
The IGL Number remains the property of EAN Ireland and is not transferable.
The IGL Number must only be used for the application as listed above.
Failure to pay the required annual charge will result in cancellation of the number and your trading partners and service providers being notified.
The IGL Number is not to be used for full EDI implementations. A separate EAN GLN is available for that purpose.
